Work Experience

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Hyperspectral X-ray micro-CT
University of Manchester / National Laboratory for X-ray CT (NXCT), UK
Jan 2026 - Current
  • Establishing a hyperspectral X-ray micro-CT user system at NXCT (Manchester)
  • The user system features a large-FOV (2x6 tiled) HEXITEC hyperspectral X-ray detector
  • Ongoing work involves equipment purchases, detector characterisation, motor programming, and the development of the image processing and CT reconstruction pipeline

Postdoctoral Researcher: Photon-counting, Phase-contrast, Spectral micro-CT
Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) / Università degli Studi di Trieste, Italy
Apr 2024 - Jan 2026
  • Modelling and experimental validation of an experimental photon-counting, phase-contrast, spectral CT system in the PEPI lab (INFN Trieste)
  • The spectral, photon-counting, phase-contrast x-ray imaging micro CT simulation tool is freely available here: PEPIsim
  • Numerous micro CT acquisitions of diverse samples requiring precision alginment
  • Introduced a GUI-based reconstruction pipeline that includes image preprocessing, CT reconstruction, phase-retrieval and spectral decomposition by contributing to existing code
  • Experience operating various types of x-ray laboratory equipment including a micro-focus x-ray source, a spectral x-ray detector, numerous motorized stages, nitrogen gas tanks, chiller

PhD Student Researcher: Laser Generated X-Ray Source / Phase-Contrast X-Ray Imaging
Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain
Sept 2020 - Apr 2024

Secondary School Science Teacher
O Castro British School, Spain
Jan 2020 - Jun 2020
  • Taught bachillerato (A level) physics as well as ESO (Y7 to Y11) physics, math, chemistry and general science to 500+ students involving two schedule changes in two months, then adapted to online teaching due to the coronavirus pandemic for the remainder of the year
  • Managed a heavy workload and adapted to sudden schedule changes (replacing two different teachers)
  • Communicated effectively with students, parents, other teachers, heads of department
  • Regular use of Microsoft word, excel, outlook, zoom, google drive to coordinate and plan within the science department
  • Slides from interview physics class.

University Teaching Assistant Positions
University of Victoria, Canada
Jan 2016 - Apr 2018
  • Developed strong presentation and communication skills by teaching over 150 undergraduate students throughout my time at the University of Victoria
  • 3 x Lab Instructor for Introductory Physics II which involves common undergraduate physics experiments
  • Statistical Programming Assistant for Computational Modelling and Analysis (Python and Java) course. Taught a lecture on an introduction to Python. As a part of this lecture, I gave several examples of monte carlo simulations such as an estimation of particle cross-section probabilities.
  • Lab Instructor for Introduction to Laboratory Electronics lab. This was a second-year lab that introduced students to a wide variety of laboratory electronic equipment
  • Assisted students in the use of common laboratory equipment
  • A brief teaching evaluation SUMMARY.

MSc Student Researcher: Personalized Radiation Therapy
University of Victoria, Canada
Sept 2015 - Aug 2017
  • Used data science techniques to personalize radiation therapy treatment for prostate cancer patients
  • Independently learned and applied data science and machine learning techniques to predict patient prostate movement during radiation therapy sessions (Python, pandas, scikit-learn)
  • Worked and communicated with a team of people coming from diverse backgrounds (oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists) to organize patient datasets

Master of Science in Physics (CAMPEP Medical Physics)
University of Victoria, Canada
Sept 2015 - Aug 2017

Master’s Thesis Topic: Data Science in medical physics and personalized radiation therapy

Master's thesis: Master's Thesis

Honours Bachelor of Science in Physics (Co-op), Magna Cum Laude
University of Ottawa, Canada
Sept 2009 - Aug 2014

Honours Project Topic: Mathematical modelling of brain neurons in Python

Notes:

  • Magna Cum Laude is a degree distinction given in Canada which means that you graduated with an approximate (it doesn't translate perfectly to percentage) overall mark of between 80% and 90%
  • Co-op indicates that I completed 16 months of professional work experience while completing my degree:
    • Photovoltaic research at the University of Ottawa (4 months)
    • Health Physics modelling at Health Canada (4 months)
    • Electrical engineering modelling at Semtech Corporation (8 months)
